‘FEEL up to conducting your first walking tour tomorrow, Stephanie?’

Intent on the fire she was laying, to keep the animals out of the camp that night, Stephanie looked up, startled. She had not heard Fraser’s footsteps on the soft sand.

‘A walking tour? Do you think I’m up to it?’

‘You won’t know until you try, will you?’

Stephanie threw a spent match into the edge of the fire; a flame licked it, engulfed it, and within seconds it had burned to nothing. Very close to the fence a hyena laughed, then was still.

‘Well, Stephanie, what do you say?’

She turned her head. The light of the dancing flames cast a glow over the man: he looked like some pagan fire god—strong, powerful, incredibly virile. A week had passed since they had danced together, and since that day the only communication between them had been strictly professional and impersonal. Without warning, a shiver of desire ran through her body.

‘Quite a responsibility for a novice,’ she said, her calm tone hiding her excitement.

‘John will be driving.’

After Timothy, John was the most experienced driver and tracker at Lalope.

‘And tomorrow I’ll be there too,’ Fraser said.

Stephanie hesitated only a few seconds longer. And then, with the warmth of the growing fire on her face, she smiled at Fraser. ‘I think I’d like to give it a try,’ she said.
